Core Concerns

Overview:

A multi sector strategy with a basket of welfare schemes in the areas of education, health, sports & youth welfare, culture, agriculture, skill development, public health and social welfare constitute the major concerns of the Tea Tribes Welfare Department.

Education:

Scholarship / Financial Assistance to the students of the Tea Tribes Community in 3 categories viz. PRE-MATRIC, POST-MATRIC & HIGHER STUDIES are granted every year. Students of Nursing are also granted Scholarship / Financial Assistance. Special coaching classes for competitive examinations for the Civil Services/Banking etc. are to be introduced from 2017.

Health:

Grants are given to patients of the Tea Tribes Community suffering from Cancer/TB & other malignant diseases as additional assistance. Construction works for a Patient Guest House at Guwahati Medical College Premises exclusively for the Tea Tribes people will commenced in 2017.

Sports and Youth Welfare:

After the success of the inaugural Chief Minister’sTea Tribes Football Tournament in 2016-17, the Department is planning to hold the tournament as an annual event with the participation of all Football Clubs of the Tea Tribes Community throughout the state. Decisions has been taken for construction of 3 Football and Archery Academies across the state for the budding sporting talents of the Tea Tribes Community.

Culture:

Workshops at the state, district and sub-divisional levels on the rich cultural heritage of the Tea Tribe Community in order to evolve a common uniform standard are held by the Department. One such workshop at the state level on JHUMUR was held in January’2017 at the SankardevKalakshetra, Guwahati was successfully conducted with the participation of over 300 artists. Cultural Organizations of the community are given grants to enable them to carry out their activities.

Young creative talents of the Tea Tribe Community will be encouraged by the Tea Tribes Department through publication of books written by them

Agriculture:

The agrarian population of the Tea Tribes community are assisted with implements like power tillers in compact groups of farmers across the state.

Skill Development:

51 Skill Development Centres across the state impart training in skills and provide wage and self-employment to the youths of the Tea Tribes Community. These centres are functioning on Public Private Partnership (PPP) Mode.

Public Health:

Facilities for providing safe drinking water to the households of the Tea Tribes Community through Deep Tube wells, Tara Pumps are provided in those areas without such facilities in coordination with the Public Health Department and the Tea Garden management.

Social Welfare:

Divyangs from amongst the Tea Tribe Community are assisted through grants. Awareness programs on Child/Human Trafficking/Family Planning/Legal Awarenessare also envisioned in 2017-18 also. The Department has also constructed several students’ hostels in the major towns of Assam with Tea Tribes populations.
